The urination process involves two major organ systems, the urinary tract and the nervous system. We sense the need to urinate when the urine volume reaches one-half of the bladder's capacity. This need is then suppressed by the brain until a person initiates urination.
The detrusor muscle contracts into a funnel shape when the nervous system signals it and expel urine once it has been initiated. The pressure in the bladder causes the detrusor muscle to remain contracted until the bladder empties. Once the bladder is empty, the pressure reduces and resumes its normal shape. There are different medications that one can take to improve symptoms of frequency, urgency and incontinence (if needed).
